The hidden benefits of Uncertainty
Have you ever thought about how insecurity and lack of direction in your life can take you to places you never thought possible?
I mean, we’ve all been insecure at some point in our lives, we’ve all thought that we didn’t have the faintest idea of what we were doing and where we were going with our lives. Believe me, it is a familiar feeling.
And even more so in today’s world, where we have virtually unlimited access to choices and pathways. So how is it that, in this age of opportunity and ease, we feel more lost and uncertain about our steps than ever before?
There are hidden benefits to uncertainty, let’s explore them together.
The excitement of uncharted territory
Something happens in our brains when we are in uncharted territory, whether through travel, necessity, or simple exploration — there is an increased level of excitement that brings us closer to who we want to be.
It is an excitement that creates a heightened awareness that makes us feel more alive and present. Suddenly our mundane problems have less and less importance in our daily lives and they tend to slowly fade from our awareness.
I have experienced this many times in my life and believe me when I tell you that it can become an addictive feeling. A feeling that you chase just for the sake of it, but it is definitely a hidden benefit that you experience when you force yourself to navigate uncertainty.
Personal growth through exploration
I am a big fan of personal growth and self-development.
Ever since I realised that I actually had the power to change and influence my life, I have been fascinated by personal growth. Even more so when I realised that one of the hidden benefits of uncertainty was self-development.
But I have to tell you, when you don’t know what you want to do with your life, personal growth becomes a “necessity” — like a life raft to keep you afloat in the ocean of life choices.
But this is by far one of the best-hidden benefits of uncertainty.
Building confidence in your decisions
How can you be confident in your decisions when you are uncertain?
You do this by embracing uncertainty and learning to trust yourself. This is key when navigating your daily life choices, it is extremely important to have a compass that can give you a ‘sense of direction’ and that compass will be your self-confidence.
And how do you build your confidence? By trusting yourself and your choices. Period.
Believing in yourself will take you to mental and geographical places you never thought you could go.
It happened to me, it will happen to you. Embrace & trust thyself.
Developing intuition and inner guidance
One of the last hidden benefits of uncertainty is the opportunity to develop your intuition and inner guidance to a high level.
As you learn to trust yourself and let go of the need to always “feel right”, something even better opens up for you — intuition.
Intuition has been described as the “sixth human sense”; your body’s innate ability to know what’s right or wrong for you; your gut feeling.
If you have ever wondered how to develop intuition and inner guidance, here is your answer. By throwing yourself into uncertainty and learning to stay afloat and functional, you will develop a high level of intuition & inner guidance in your life.
Redefining Success and Happiness
Okay, now that we have discussed the hidden benefits of uncertainty, it is time to talk about success.
What do you think of when I mention the word ‘success’? Have you ever thought that maybe the images you have in your mind are someone else’s definition of success?
I mean, who told you that to be successful you have to have the best car, the best house, the best career, and the most zeros in your bank account, and only then can you call yourself “successful” and “happy”.
To me, this is a load of BS.
We have been programmed to believe many things since childhood, and the concept or idea of success and happiness is no different. We have been made to believe that the only way to experience happiness is to spend all our time and energy pursuing the things that society has told us will make us happy and successful.
How did we get here? Social media has not helped us on this front either. Since the advent of these new technologies, our perception of what we should strive for has become even more distorted.
It is actually time to redefine success & happiness on our own terms.
So stop looking outside of yourself for the answers to the above questions, stop asking Google, stop asking your friends, and stop scrolling through your Medium feed — you will not find what YOU really want there.
Instead, slow down, take a very long deep breath, and listen to your intuition and inner guidance, they know 100% better than anyone else out there what is best for you.
I have wanted to influence & inspire people through my words and actions since I was young, but for many years I thought the best way was to start a Youtube channel and record myself, I tried many times and never stuck with it, why? Because I followed what everyone told me to do: “Start a Youtube channel, spit out a video every other day and you will be successful”, little did I know at the time that my best way was actually writing.
If I hadn’t taken the time to slow down and listen to myself, I probably never would have understood that the best way for me to communicate with the world was through writing. There’s just too much noise out there these days, you need to tune out.
The importance of the journey, not the destination
Yes, I know you have heard this a million times, but it is true.
Especially if you are trying to live your life in a ‘non conventional’ way, it is extremely important to understand the importance of the journey and learn how to enjoy it.
If you don’t, you may give up too soon and not realise your full potential.
The point is, in a conventional 9–5 journey you can reap the rewards of your actions very quickly (at the end of the month or week); but, when you follow non-conventional journeys or create your own personal career path— the rewards are very delayed.
And I know, this is extremely difficult to do, we humans love to be constantly motivated and excited to do things — and rewards are one of the best ways to do that, but we have chosen the less traveled path, and on that path, rewards come late.
So we’ve got to learn to respect & enjoy the journey — the rewards will come as long as we keep going.
The Power of Adaptability
Being adaptable will take you further than anything else. I am deadly serious, if there is one single skill you should develop this year, it is by far adaptability.
We, humans, are already adaptable creatures and that is what has given us a competitive advantage over other animal species. Therefore, we should nurture this skill and make it stronger over time.
Our modern society is so good at throwing things at us and expecting us to simply react, adaptability is proactive and conscious action — rather than passive reaction that simply keeps us in a negative loop.
Embracing change and the unexpected
So I say to you, embrace change as your best friend and learn that nothing in life is ever the same, we change, the people around us change, and the environment changes. You get it.
We fear it because it is in our innate survival system to fear change and to fear the unexpected, but the moment we learn to open our arms and brains to the beautiful things that change brings to our lives — that is the moment we really start to live.
So embrace change and change will take care of you.
Inspiring examples of those who thrived in the face of the unknown
Ah, the unknown. That vast, terrifying abyss that seems to swallow up our dreams and aspirations. And yet there are those fearless souls who, despite facing the great cosmic abyss, manage to emerge victorious, holding their triumphant dreams aloft for all to see.
First, there is J.K. Rowling, staring down the barrel of a bleak future, armed with nothing but her trusty typewriter and a head full of wizardry. With a bank account close to zero and children to raise, Rowling persevered and turned her idea into a global phenomenon, proving that sometimes uncertainty can create a magical world beyond our wildest dreams.
And who could forget Steve Jobs? Ousted unceremoniously from his own company, our turtleneck-clad hero wandered the wilds of his own insecurity. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, he embraced the unknown and nurtured it into a new venture, only to return to Apple like a triumphant prodigal son. In the face of uncertainty, he conjured up a revolution of iPhones, iPads, and iMacs that changed the way we look at fruit forever.
So, dear reader, be inspired by these intrepid dreamers who ventured into the unknown and emerged victorious. Embrace the chaos, the uncertainty, and the downright absurdity of life’s unpredictable journey. In the end, you may find that you not only survive the storm, but thrive in it. So go forth and conquer the unknown, brave adventurer.
